 Sants Montjuïc

Sants-Montjuïc is one of 10 districts Barcelona contains. Since 1984 it is shortly called District 3. It covers the southern part of the city. It borders to  Les Corts, Eixample , Ciutat Vella , L’Hospitalet de Llobregat and El Prat de Llobregat. On the « Plaza Espanya » the districts of Sants Montjuïc and Eixample meet each other.trans Sants Montjuïc Actually only a round about, the Plaza Espanya is a very famous Place in Barcelona. In the ancient times the city wall of Barcelona ran through it. Here was the rest of the area for those who wanted to commute to Barcelona. Gigantic stairs ascend to the MNAC, Museu National d’ Art Catalunya and later to Montjuïc and its popular parks itself. Half way up the steps there is the magic fountain located, which entertains lot of people with its amazing show of light-water and music effects, in the evenings of the weekends in summer times. The area around the Plaza Espanya is very quiet and safe and not far away from the old city center. You only have to walk about 15 minutes and you find yourself right on the “Plaza Catalunya” and the “Rambla”. At the Plaza espanya numerous bus-and metro lines stop and even in the night the “nit bus” takes you from the “Plaza Catalunya” to the “Plaza Espanya”. Overall there are various bars and restaurants where you can enjoy the nice Spanish summer nights. It is a pretty good area to live if you want to combine the pros of a metropolis and the quietness and nature of beautiful Montjuïc!

arc de triomf5 Have a Memorable Holiday

One of the beauties of Europe, is that you may be walking around and “bam” you have a historical monument in the middle of a city.  Well, imagine waking up each morning to an Arc of Triumph.  Barcelona offers that possibility with many of history’s wonders. trans Have a Memorable Holiday Especially with companies such as Barcelona-Home, and some others, you can easily stay within a small distance from cites that are well-known around the world!  Sometimes, you can even stay right next to them.  And with transportation always beeing an important element with such monuments, it is safe to say, that a flat under these conditions, is everything a traveler may need to have a memorable stay.
So if you are looking to make a holiday in Barcelona even more special, you should really consider looking for a shared flat, hotel, or complete flat, near one of the city´s treasures.  It is not everyday that one can walk up to such a place, and stay in an affordable location at the same time.  Another important point is that there is always good restaurants around these locations, and for people who are hungry for more than just what our eyes may see, this is crucial as well.  I onced stayed in an apartment next to the Sagrada Familia, and I can say that when I think of Barcelona, I think of Gaudi´s impressive structure as a vivid part of my memory.   Each time I remember, I can smell the church´s  mystical scent, and clearly see it´s dark gothic colors.  I believe that because of this, Barcelona will always have a special place inside of me.

park guell1 Where to Stay in Barcelona?

If you have never been to Barcelona before, it may be hard figuring out where you want to exactly stay. Barcelona has many different areas, and therefore making it easy to find a place that satisfies what you are looking for.  trans Where to Stay in Barcelona?Once you know how much you want to spend, and what type of neighbourhood, the apartment search can becme much easier.  In general there are three main areas of Barcelona; Ciutat Vella (Old City), L’Eixample (The Extension), Gracia. The Old City which is in the city center is the oldest part of Barcelona, and the most touristy.  Within this area there is El Born, Barri Gotic, and El Raval.  Even though these areas give the old city feel, they are also the most touristy, and therefore high in crimes. There are many quaint restaurants, bars, and boutiques through out the small winding roads, and Las Ramblas runs through the middle of the area. This is a popular area for students and younger adults, due to the fact that it has a lot of nightlife. El Born is the most stylish neighborhood, and still maintains a neighborhood feel.  The Barri Gotic, with old cobbled streets, is a bit more pricey than the other neighborhoods, but will make you feel as if you are living in the medieval times. El Raval is a very multicultural diverse neighborhood, with some parts being very artsy, and edgy while other parts can be shady. L’Eixample is an area of Barcelona that is divided into the Izquierda(left) and the Derecha (right).  This part of town is reasonably priced, safer, and has architecture done by Antoni Gaudi and Lluis Domench i Montaner. There are many restaurants, shops, local grocers, and a great place for families and professionals to live. Gracia, which has a bohemian vibe, has narrow streets and squares where people come to meet. Gracia has a great night life of bars, as well as some amazing restaurants and cafes.  Rent in this part of town is more affordable than the other areas. When choosing where to live in Barcelona, there are many different options.  No matter where you end up staying in Barcelona it will be a great experience, and no place is an “awful” place to stay, after all you are in Barcelona. img 0344 Living like a Knight

Imagine living in an ancient, medieval jousting part of town in Barcelona.  That is exactly where you can find an apartment or shared flat for the holidays if you know where to look.  To talk about one of the many parts of the city, we’ll cover the part of town called El Borntrans Living like a Knight
Now one of the most fashionable places of the city, El Born is a witness to packed cafes at night, and claimed to have one of the best pizza places in the city near Passeig de Born.  It is important to know that this Passeig de Born is the most important street that acts as the heart of the area.  So besides the nightlife factor, this part of the Ciutat Vella (old city) can offer a blast of culture as well.
On one simple little medieval street you have the Picasso museum and the textile museum as well.  Besides this, there is a beautiful cathedral that dates back a while in history as well.  I will definitely not visit this place without my camera.  Another reason for people to stroll around this area, is the abundance of shoes shops, which is big in Spain, and little fancy boutiques.  This place is quickly becoming a trendy, fashion magnet for people all around the city, and even those who visit the capital of Catalunya.
With its great position between Via Laietana and Barceloneta, the metro is easily reached through the same line.   The metro stops are Barceloneta and Jaume on the yellow line.  Also keep in mind that with the stop Barcelona, you are only minutes from the beaches!  This provides you with a holiday with a great city aspect, and some beach time as well.
So if you are interested in escaping the tourist traps, and meeting more locals than likely, look with companies such as barcelona-home, for sweet holiday flats, so you can have agreat time in Barcelona.  Whether accompanied with the family or on you own, this part of the city will not disappoint you, and in fact, will leave you wanting more.  Good luck finding a place in this knightly place.

barri gotic 300x196 Barri Gòtic

For those of you who are looking for staying near the real heart of Barcelona, then you seek a place near el Barri Gòtic.  This part of the old city is actually where present day Barcelona was originated from.trans Barri Gòtic
The city of Barcelona began to take form in Roman times, even though it has a stronger Medieval presence, and some of its Roman structures still exist today.  Two of the main roads that were used back then are now replaced by Called del Bisbe and carrer de la Llibreteria.  Also, the Roman forum that once was a part of the city, was once where Plaça de Sant Jaume is today.  It is also still possible to see remains of the Roman walls in Plaça de Ramon Berenguer el Gran.
Near the inception of the Middle-Ages, the construction for the cathedral that we can all see in the Barri Gòthic was in its earliest stages.  It is considered one of the masterpieces of the Spanish gothic style.  Unfortunately it has been under renovation for some time lately, but it is still a special place to see.  Plus there is even a very delicious tapa restaurant near by.
The old neighborhood is also the home of the historically, important plaza de sants Jaume.  This plaza has the two most important administration buildings of Catalunya: Generalitat de Catalunya and Town Hall.  Besides these regularly visited sights, there is just so much more: the Plaça de Sant Felip Neri (now a museum), la Casa de la Ardíaca (another museum as well), and other architectual masterpieces such as Palau Reial Major,  Palau de Lloctinent, and the chapel of Santa Ágata.
With so many places to visit, and such historical background, el barri gòtic is the perferc place to get a shared or complete flat for the holidays.

IMG 03411 Live near the beach in Barceloneta!

Barcelona has so many different parts of the city, which it makes it hard to decide where you want to live.  The city of Barcelona has a lot to offer, from the architecture of Antoni Gaudi, the old city center, Las Ramblas, and the beach.  By figuring out what you want to live near, can help you decide where you want to live. trans Live near the beach in Barceloneta! If you want to live near the beach, Barceloneta is a perfect option.  The neighborhood was constructed during the 18th Century, when residents of the old Ribera neighborhood (near El Born) had been displaced, and the area has also been home to many fishermen. The beaches are very lively during the hot summer days, and the clubs are busy until early in the morning.  Chiringuitos, beachside bars, are found all along the beach, and are great places to grab a drink and/or a snack. There are many seafood restaurants along the boardwalk, and around the marina. Barceloneta is known for their beaches, restaurants and clubs along the boardwalk.  Even though it is not in the center of the city, it is still considered part of Ciutat Vella, or old city. The neighborhood is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, Born District, and the Port Vell.  The construction of the neighborhood has a more modern feel to it. Along the boardwalk and the surrounding area, there are many contemporary buildings and sculptures. However, if you go through the back streets, there is still an old city feel.   The Parc Cuitadella is a short walking distance, and is a great place to have a picnic in the park. Barceloneta is very close to the city center, and is accessible by walking or taking the metro (Barceloneta has its own stop on the yellow line). If you plan on spending many days at the beach while in Barcelona, the Barceloneta neighborhood is a perfect option to stay!

L'Eixample

For those of you that are looking for a unique district of Barcelona, you should consider getting a holiday flat in the district of Eixample.trans LEixample This district is divided into two different parts, Esquerra (right) de l’Eixample, and Dreta (or left) de l’Eixample.  It is true that since this neighborhood is mostly above the street Diagonal, that they are mostly well-to-do areas of the city, as the more modern parts are above the street.  These neighborhoods are very well kept up, and were built in a very organized manner.  It is really nice to walk around the area, because it does seem like a cleaner and simply better part of the huge city.   Since the streets are so wide, there is great visibility, and there are parking spots, which would not be there otherwise.  To make things even better, there are great famous places to visit such as Casa de Mila, and the magnificent Sagrada Familia.  I highly recommend both of these places, and any restaurants (such as the delicious tapa bar Aitor) or shops nearby them, which are plentiful.  Further, you have the Passeig de Gracia, which is a wonderful pedestrian street to stroll down through.  The Casa Terrades, better known as Casa de les Punxes, is a spectacular building replete with medieval structures.  Also, the Casa Batlló is part of another well-known block.  So most of the modernista style of architecture can be found in this part of town, which may be the reason why it is so distinguishable from the rest.  Now that you know more about this district of L’Eixample, do not hestitate to look for a flat nearby it, and enjoy the city of Barcelona.  If you are looking for ways to find a flat, you should check out some companies, like Barcelona-home or others that offer great services.

sink Save Water!

I know it is not the first thing that you think about when you decide to spend your holidays in Barcelona. There are so many other things which are more important for you. What you are going to see, what you are going to do… But I want you to know that it is quite crucial to take care of the behavior in association to the use of water.trans Save Water! It is not a theme that has been discussed much in the media, but in fact it is a big problem of us all. Although water is one of the renewable resources, we will have the same problem with it like we know we will have with the fuel.

The rise in the consumption of water is concentrated in the big cities. Caused to the increasing number of inhabitants, the higher life standard and in special regions the seasonal tourism the consumption of water has reduplicated in the last 40 years!

What follows you may saw last year right here in Barcelona. Because of there was the worst emergency in dryness for the last 50 years, the reservoir of drink-able water minimized to only 25 per cent of the normal situation. It was a very critical situation and the government thought about to let the water out of the pipes only few hours per day to control the emergency.

To avoid such a situation in 2009 it had been planned that about 7 tankers full of 28.000 cubic-meter fresh-water are going to be transported from the also dry south of France, like they did last year. In addition it is planned to deliver fresh water from Marseille to Barcelona in a very complex piping to avoid a drying-out of the cost metropolis.

But the transportation with the tankers is disproportional expensive and shows how inefficient the resource water is handled in Spain. The costs of transporting water are not proportional to the costs of water; they are 8 till 10 times higher.

The climate change, so calculate experts, could cause a fast crowing of desertification of Spain. That means we have to think carefully about how to manage the resource water and that we even on our holidays have to save water, because it is maybe the most valuable treasure that we have on earth.

inorout Interior or Exterior?

The question is: Interior or Exterior?
If you have planned to come to Barcelona and you are searching for a place to stay, it doesn`t always have to be a hotel room…  Spend your holidays, work time, or internships in a share flat! It is a unique feeling, if you are active and like to meet new people it will surely appeal to you. trans Interior or Exterior? You should know the followwing things about about renting a room in Spain:
Basically you can choose from different rooms in Spain, in the “interior” or “exterior”.  This means that the corresponding room is belonging to the inner courtyard site of the building, or the street side. Both can have pros and cons. For those who like it to be calm at night and don´t mind if there has to be artificial light throughout the night should choose an “interior” room. It is a good thing if you are the whole day away from your room and only come home to sleep. Anyway, the bulk of life in Spain takes place on the streets and not in the flats. And if you want to enjoy the sun, then it is much better to go on the beach. But if you like to have a sunny room with always fresh air inside, and don´t bother if there is the noise from the streets the whole night, you should choose an “exterior” room.
Now it´s your turn. Think about what you prefer, come to this fabulous city and rent a room! If you don´t want to search by yourself, companies as Barcelona-home can help you to find a great place to stay during your holidays, internship, work or study.

outlet Outlet Converter

If traveling from outside the European Union it is useful to know the watt and voltage of Spain. When I first came to Spain, when I was younger, I remember putting my blow dryer in the wrong plug and not only ruining my blow dryer, but also blowing out all the lights. trans Outlet ConverterThe voltage in Spain is different than other countries outside the European Union which makes it necessary to have a transformer or an outlet converter. The voltage here is 220V, 50 Hz (cycles).  In the United States the voltage is 110V, and 60 Hz, which means bad news if you try and make it work. Make sure the wattage of the transformer matches the wattage of the appliance. It seems as if many blow dryers are ruined each year, due to blow dryer producing too mach power, and the fuse blows before the wire gets so hot that it starts fire.  In the United States, the plug has 2 flat pins, however in Spain the plug has 2 round pins. For the appliance to fit in the plug, it needs an adapter plug. This can be bought at many travel stores and should be purchased before leaving your country. However, if you are already in Barcelona, check out El Corte Ingles, or an electoronic store, but be prepared for them to be a bit more expensive. You do not want to be that person, who blows out the electricty in the entire apartment or hotel, so make sure you have the right converter. Make sure that your electircal appliances are dual voltage so they will work in Spain. If the appliances start making a weird noise, and gets hot; TURN IT OFF IMMEDIATELY!

universitat1 Student friendly Barcelona?

Living in Barcelona is definitely great for students, even if it’s not a low cost experience. Besides the rent you get many amenities, in almost every kind of interest. trans Student friendly Barcelona? For instance, with the Sagrada Familia, Barcelona City History, Funicular Montjuïc you can receive discounts for all these places, and the Catalunya History Museum is even totally free of charge for students. All you have to do for everywhere you is show your student ID, even your national student ID can work because it is an international one. Ask your university where you can get one, because some of the attractions only accept the international one. For example if you want to visit one of the biggest aquariums in Europe, the L’Aquárium Barcelona you must pay 17 € if you don’t have an international student ID. Some attractions like the Zoo Barcelona don’t have a discount for students at all, but nevertheless there are few places which are free of charge! Nearly every museum has one day in the month a day with free admission and on the 24th September (La Mercé, day of the patron saint of Barcelona) the admissions to all sights are free. But remember that according to the free entry everyone goes into the sights at that special day and that it will be totally full of people everywhere. In summary, Barcelona is a very student-friendly city, although the entrance of the nightclubs is very expensive. If you want to save money, and I know students always want to save money, I recommend you contact a company such as Barcelona-home which can get you onto a guestlist of the best clubs in Barcelona!

lasramblas3 MultiRambles Exhibitions and activities

The Rambla of Barcelona is, without a doubt, a center where society and tourism come together. Barcelona wouldn’t be Barcelona without La Rambla. A wander up and down this famous boulevard is a ritual well worth seeing. Since the 90s, the city has become a reference point of the international tourist scene. trans MultiRambles Exhibitions and activitiesBarcelona is constantly holding and improving its leading position in the area of city tourism in Europe in the last years. In the year 2005 Barcelona had 11 million overnight stays and the numbers are rising up every year.
Step by step, leisure and cultural attractions found the perfect location on La Rambla. The disguised performers and florists and newsstands set up their premises there. As you walk along, you’ll see landmark buildings, such as Barcelona’s opera house, the Gran Teatre de Liceu, the Palau de la Virreina and the spectacular Boqueria Market. This human river, with its street artists, tourists and locals, who still come here for a stroll, take us on a journey through this microcosm of contemporary Barcelona. Where La Rambla meets the sea, is where the Columbus Monument is located, which was built in the year 1888 due to the world exhibition and in memory of Christopher Columbus.
La Rambla is exactly 1.2 kilometres long and everyone who visits Barcelona walks along it. This boulevard was laid out in 1766, following the contours of the medieval city walls that had delimited this part of Barcelona since the 13th century. The locals took it to their hearts promptly. In a city of narrow, winding streets, the new main road was the only space where everyone could promenade and spend their leisure time. La Rambla became a meeting place for all the social classes until now…
But how do the people from Barcelona live this reality between mass of tourists, normal daily life and old catalan history and traditions? How does it affect the urban self-esteem and the appreciation of the authenticity of the city? The exhibition “MultiRambles” (29/5/2009 To 19/7/2009) throws hypothesis of opportunities and ideas aimed at “rethinking” and reinventing an urban model that satisfies everyone. The exhibition is integrated within the program “Turisme. Espais de ficció”Tourism. Spaces of Fiction), which has been carried out by the DHUB and which revolves around tourism, from the planning, the project and the design.

graciaespanyol Renting an Apartment

Often staying in an apartment is overlooked, and people just look at staying in a hotel or hostel whilst in Barcelona. However, staying in an apartment is a great option, no matter the length of your stay.trans Renting an Apartment Staying in an apartment offers you all the benefits of living at home. There is privacy, and you are able to cater to your own needs. A big positive about staying in an apartment is that it is cheaper than a hotel.  A hotel for a single room is usually around 150-200 euros a night. You also save money, because you are able to stay in and cook rather than going out to eat everyday for lunch and dinner. If there are more than three people in a group, you will save a significant amount of money. You will have more room, and the price is cheaper.  Since many people overlook staying in an apartment, during the peak season it can be difficult finding the right hotel, and you may end up staying further away then you hoped, in a bad hotel.
