Barcelona has an extensive underground transport network, as well as the RENFE trains and their short distance lines called Rodalies. There are also the FGC trains. The Rodalies trains are suitable for commuters as well as for people making short trips to the places outside Barcelona. Most of the trains head towards northern or southern areas such as Blanes or Sitges.
Stations
Estació de Sants is the main station situated in the west of Barcelona (between Avengida Diagonal and Plaza de España). The majority of the short and long distance trains that operate out of this modern station go towards France or the rest of Spain. Metro lines L3 and L5 stop here.
Estació de França is a nostalgic end-of-the-line station situated south of Barcelona’s Ciutadella park. Here is where the National upper class trains depart and arrive. The Metro station Barceloneta (L4) is only a few 100 meters away.
Passeig de Gràcia station is an underground station. Many short distance trains to and from Estació de Sants pass through here. Metro lines L2, L3, L4 and FCG also stops here.
At Barcelona’s Estació Plaça de España you can take the FGC trains, for example towards Montserrat and Manresa, as well as Metro lines L1 and L3.
Plaça de Catalunya serves the FGC lines towards Tibidabo, Sant Cugat and the northern cities, as well as many Rodalies lines. Here you can also find the Metro lines L1 and L3.
Short distance travel
The tickets are valid on the Metro, FGC, buses and Rodalies through out the whole city. The Underground train has two lines, which connects the city centre with the higher suburbs. They also connect with some Metro stations.
*The price for a one-way ticket in zone 1 is 1,30 €, a Targeta and a ticket for 10 journeys costs 7,20€
*For longer distance travels, you may have to purchase a special ticket. Ask on the stations.

The taxi is the most comfortable form of transport in Barcelona. Barcelona taxis are unmistakable, due to their color of Black and Yellow. A green light indicates they are free and one only needs to raise a hand to stop one. They should all have a meter on which the price of the trip is indicated.
How to Get a Taxi
Barcelona’s taxis are very efficient and can be found at taxi ranks, hailed on the street or can be ordered by phone. Rates in Barcelona are considerably cheaper in comparison to other major cities in Europe.
Rates and Fares
A 15 minute ride will probably cost you about €10. In Barcelona, additional charges are usually added when transporting luggage and will usually be indicated on the meter.
*Tipping is not absolutely necessary though it is appropriate to leave the driver 5 – 10% of the charge.

Barcelona’s port is rated second in Europe for commercial traffic and first for cruise ships. The harbor has eight passenger terminals (five for cruise liners and three for ferries). Ferry traffic is run by 4 companies that operate regular services between Barcelona and Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza (Balearic Islands) and Genova (Italy):
Transmediterránea
Buquebus
Grandi Navi Veloci
Umafisa

Located close to the city centre, to the west of Montjuïc and below Barri Gòtic, the Port de Barcelona, run by Autoritat Portuària de Barcelona has re-established its status as one of the major Mediterranean maritime destinations in recent years. In addition to being an important cargo port, it is the second largest Mediterranean cruise centre after Athens. In 2001, the port handled 544 liners and over half a million passengers.

Crueurs del Porte de Barcelona runs four cruise ship terminals – two at Moll Adossat and two at the World Trade Centre – and the Autoritat Portuària de Barcelona runs the Port Vell terminal. All the terminals have tourist information centres, travel agencies, a flight connection service, bureau change, first-aid facilities, duty-free and souvenir shops, bars, restaurants and international newspaper stands. Taxis and shuttle buses provide transportation to the city centre. Parking and car hire services are also available.
Barcelona Ferry Services
The Transmediterranea ferry departs daily from Barcelona to Palma de Mallorca throughout the year. From the 15th of June until 15th of September a second ferry departs from the city’s port (only 4 days per week). The journey takes approximately 8 hours. Prices start at arnound 130 euros for a small car and 50 euros per person and cabins are approximately 60 euros per person. Reservations at all major travel agencies (recommended in the summer season).
In case you missed a ferry or you don’t get a ticket in time, you may wish to drive to Valencia where the Transmediterránea also departs to Mallorca every day. Prices and transfer times are the same as from Barcelona.
If you are coming to Barcelona from France then an option would be to catch a ferry in Sete (South France). But from here the trip takes 16 hours to Mallorca and the prices are much higher compared to those from Barcelona.
There is also a fast ferry connection between Tarragona (not far from Barcelona) and Palma de Mallorca, called the “Almudaina”, – which departs on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays and takes only 3h 45min. The ship can take 450 passengers and 87 cars. Departure times and prices are available in nearly every travel office or on their home-page.

Barcelona is well known for its wonderful sightseeing and for its weather, and there is no better way to enjoy the sunny city than getting around by bike. You will find many different companies across Barcelona who rent all types of bikes for however long you desire, hours, days or months. Whether travelling alone or with friends, a bike tour around the city is the perfect way to spend a day in Barcelona!
Barcelona Bicing is a service recommended for people who will be living in the city for temporary periods (usually more than 30 days) and have resident or European identification. This is a local city company that rents out bikes at street stations all over the city for regular users and it is specified that it is not a tourist service. If you are going to study in Barcelona or be here a while its a very cheap way to get around in short distances while doing some exercise everyday. If you’ll be here just for few days, looking for a different way to get around in the city you may prefer to rent a bike.
